Avril’s Lavigne‘s upcoming song “Fly” played a major role in the singer’s personal life. And we’ll get to hear it very, very soon.

Talking to PEOPLE about how she coped with the Lyme disease diagnosis that left her bedridden for five months, Avril says the song gave her hope.

“Knowing that I have the release of the song to look forward to and knowing that my fans were waiting for the new music helped me stay alive inside during some of my darkest times,” she told the magazine.

According to Avril, “Fly” will be released this month in support of the 2015 Special Olympics World Games. Proceeds from the track will go toward the Avril Lavigne Foundation, which raises funds for young people living with serious illnesses and disabilities.

Avril also told PEOPLE that her mother and husband got her through the worst of her illness. Despite rumors that Avril and Chad were facing marital difficulties, the singer said, “he’s been very supportive.”

Avril’s fans played an important role in her recovery, too.”The get-well messages and videos they sent touched me so deeply. I lay in bed watching them and cried so much because I felt loved. It was so powerful and beautiful,” she said.
