Bill Cosby is facing an arrest warrant for a drugging and sexual assault that allegedly took place in 2004, Montgomery County, Pa., authorities announced today (December 30). The charges center around one woman’s accusation that Cosby drugged and assaulted her at his home in Philadelphia suburb Cheltenham Township, the New York Times reports.
Kevin Steele, Montgomery County’s district attorney-elect, said in a press conference that Cosby is facing a first-degree felony charge of aggravated indecent assault. Steele said the accuser first met Cosby when she was working with the basketball team at Temple University, the comic’s alma mater.
The woman says she visited Cosby’s home, where she resisted two unwanted sexual advances. Cosby then allegedly urged her to take pills and drink wine until she could no longer move, saying she felt “frozen” and “paralyzed” according to the D.A.’s statement.
“The evidence is strong and sufficient to proceed,” Mr. Steele stated. “A person in that state cannot give consent.”
The felony count is Cosby’s first criminal charge among more than 40 similar allegations against the comic. The majority of cases surpassed the statue of limitations; this accuser’s did not. Cosby admitted to obtaining Quaaludes and dosing a least one woman he wanted to sleep with in a 2005 deposition.
Cosby is slated for arraignment this afternoon. Stay tuned for further updates.
