‘Birdman’ Wins Best Picture at 2015 Oscarsby Michelle McGahan | PopCrush
After taking home three Oscars tonight — including Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography — Birdman scored the most coveted prize of the night: Best Picture.
Fresh from his Best Director win, Birdman director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu — along with the rest of the cast and crew of the film — went up to accept the highest honor in film, thanking everyone associated with the movie — and his wife! — before handing the mic over to the film’s star, Michael Keaton.
“This has been a tremendous experience. This guy is as bold as bold can be. It was a tremendous honor for me to — Look, it’s great to be here,” he joked, interrupting himself and getting a huge laugh from the audience. “Who am I kidding? This is just great fun.”
Still, Inarritu wanted to end the speech on a powerful note, sending a message to all of his fellow Mexican people.
“I want to dedicate this award for my fellow Mexicans. The ones who live in Mexico — I pray that we can find and build a government that we deserve,” the director said. “And the ones that live in this country who are part of the latest generation of immigrants in this country, I just pray that they can be treated with the same dignity and respect of the ones who came before — the ones who built this incredible, immigrant nation.”
Congratulations to Birdman on their Best Picture win! Watch the acceptance speech in the video above.
