Demi Lovato Not a Fan of Poot Lovato Memeby PopCrush Staff | PopCrush
Demi Lovato doesn’t appreciate the pervasive Poot Lovato meme that’s been endless in its online circulation over the past few days, thanks.
According to two tweets posted by the “Cool For The Summer” singer today (October 23), Demi did not find much humor in Poot Lovato. She wrote, “Cool to see a sh—ty angle turn into a meme that circulates the Internet to people’s amusement ha. Oh and make actual ‘headlines.'”
Here’s the backstory: A particularly unflattering photo of Demi began circulating the web a while ago because bad pictures of celebrities often bring the general public some vague semblance of amusement. There’s something disconcertingly entertaining about the notion that celebrities, with all their perfect lighting, hair and makeup, can occasionally take a bad photo just like the rest of us. It’s why we, here at PopCrush, have an entire gallery devoted to celebrities whose faces are devoid of makeup. Simple stuff.
But it wasn’t until recently that someone decided to make up an entire backstory for that particular photo of Demi — and it exploded online, as these things do. According to an extensive history provided by BuzzFeed because of course, the meme began with now-deleted Tumblr user Cstcrpt who captioned the photo, “Demi’s twin sister. She was locked in a basement her whole life. This picture was taken the first time she went outside. Her name is Poot.”
Soon after, a Twitter user adopted the handle @OfficialPoot and began tweeting as the mythical Poot Lovato. From there, the story only began to build, as someone wrote an entire story titled The Secret Life of Poot Lovato and posted it on the self-publishing site Wattpad. A Wikipedia entry was eventually created, because fans consistently take things too far, and Poot Lovato took on a life of its own.
The entire thing was all intended in good fun, probably, but once the meme gained traction with media outlets like E! News, Demi found out about it, got upset and tweeted. Perhaps realizing it’s fruitless to fight against an Internet meme, she deleted the tweets moments later, but you can check them out above, because the Internet never forgets.
Do you think the Internet went too far with Poot Lovato? Did you participate in exploiting the meme? Do you feel bad now? Let us know your thoughts!
