Let Demi Lovato Take You To Church With Her Hozier Coverby Samantha Vincenty | PopCrush
Demi Lovato stepped into the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge today (September 9) and — like Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry and so many artists before her— she covered a song she loves. The song in question? Hozier‘s “Take Me To Church.”
Host Clara Amfo asked Demi what inspired her choice, a song that was released in 2013 but slow-built into massive success in the past year. “I think the first time I heard it was on the radio,” she said. “And I was like wow, this is on pop radio. In fact, it doesn’t sound like a pop song, but the term ‘pop’ means ‘popular’ so: It is a pop song. But I was so — I think I even tweeted, thank god somebody put this on the radio, because this is incredible music.”
Demi was pleased to hear that the Irish singer-songwriter, who covered Ariana Grande‘s “Problem” in Live Lounge at the beginning of 2015, would probably hear her take on his breakthrough track. Then she launched into her cover — hitting Hozier’s low notes in the first verse is a challenge, but Demi meets it with an almost jazzy flair — and she absolutely kills it on the “A-a-a-a-me-eh-en.” Watch below.
Demi recently wowed crowds with another live cover, tackling Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way,” and she’s ramping up to the release of her upcoming Confident album.
