Drake Debuts Insane ‘Energy’ Video on Apple Musicby Ali Szubiak | PopCrush
The video itself is a mishmash parody of major moments in fairly-recent pop culture. The true highlight of the clip is seeing Drake’s face digitally superimposed over the actors playing various celebrities — Drake is Oprah during Tom Cruise’s bizarre jumping-on-the-couch moment, he’s Justin Bieber in those racy Calvin Klein and Miley Cyrus in “Wrecking Ball.”
Better still is his sort-of homage to his Canadian roots — Drake plays Toronto Mayor Rob Ford who, in case you somehow forgot, was caught on video smoking crack last year.
Pretty much every reference made in the video is either recent enough to be instantly recalled, or made a large enough impact on our cultural consciousness to be recognizable. O.J. Simpson was acquitted in 1995, but you’d be hard-pressed to find an American who doesn’t get the white Bronco reference. (Well, we hope that’s true, anyway.)
Drake’s partnership with Apple Music shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s paid attention over the past few weeks. Drake and The Weeknd initially helped unveil Apple’s newest effort back in June, so offering his latest music video to the site first is a no-brainer.
If you’s curious about “Energy” (and you should be, it’s quite a spectacle), head over to Apple Music to check it out. You might as well do it now, while there’s a free 3-month trial membership available. And go ahead and stream Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ while you’re at it, for principle’s sake.
