Jess Glynne Recreates ‘Rather Be’ Magic On ‘Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself’
by Matthew Scott Donnelly | PopCrushIf you’re down on your luck and in need of some good juju, Jess Glynne has proven to be a one-woman production line.
The big-voiced pop star, whose “Rather Be” collaboration with Clean Bandit is still a radio standby, has just released new tune “Don’t be so Hard on Yourself,” and it’s equal parts self-acceptance anthem and party-ready earworm with a glittery touch of disco. In other words, it’s Glynne’s early niche.
“I came here with a broken heart that no one else could see / I drew a smile on my face til they were over me / The wounds heal and tears dry and cracks they don’t show / So don’t be so hard on yourself, no,” she opens the track over bouncy piano chords that hasten into a full-blown club chant.
“Don’t be so hard on yourself, no / Learn to forgive, learn to let go / Everyone trips, everyone falls / So don’t be so hard on yourself, no,” the chorus pleads. Call Glynne Mary Poppins: The song’s message is medicine, and her tone is a complementary spoonful of sugar.
Glynne’s debut album, I Cry When I Laugh, is scheduled for release on August 21 and also features singles “Right Here” and “Hold my Hand.”
