Katy Perry, Mariah Carey Stun As Elizabeth Taylor and Marie Antoinette in ‘Harper’s Bazaar’ Icons Issueby Ali Szubiak | PopCrush
If you hoped to someday see a very specific photo shoot that comprises stars like Katy Perry, Mariah Carey and Oprah, styled as icons like Elizabeth Taylor, Marie Antoinette and Glinda the Good Witch respectively, you probably figured that dream would die a fiery death. Some things just aren’t meant to be, you know?
Well, hold fast to your peculiar imagination, because because Harper’s Bazaar has fulfilled your most bizarre fantasy with their 2015 Icons issue.
The magazine’s global fashion director, Carine Roitfeld, had modern-day stars dress up as legendary icons, ranging from celebrities to fictional characters and goddesses. Roitfield commented on the September issue to NY Mag, saying: “We wanted [an] eclectic international mix of characters. You know, a mix like Warhol’s Factory meets a Hall of Fame meets pop-culture icons of today.”
In order to do this most efficiently, she and photographer Jean-Paul Gode (who most recently shot those not-quite-Internet-breaking Kim Kardashian photos for Paper Magazine) asked each person “Who do you want to be? Who is your fantasy?” and “How would we make you look?”
Katy Perry appears as Elizabeth Taylor, styled to resemble Taylor’s iconic Andy Warhol portrait. Katy said she chose Taylor because “an icon transcends time. Liz was so fabulous and decadent and had a style that evolved with the years…and I’m sure I’ll be married just as many times!”
Mariah, meanwhile, says Marie Antoinette was a good choice for the costume. She said, “I’m pretty much the opposite of Marie Antoinette, but it’s always fun to throw on a costume.”
And Oprah explained her pick of Glinda the Good Witch, saying, “The Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite spiritual tales, and Glinda is a spiritual goddess. I love when she says to Dorothy, ‘You’ve always had the power.’ That is the message for all of us: You’re born with it, you always have it. It doesn’t matter how many yellow brick roads you go down, it’s always right there in your heart.”
You can check out the full slideshow, including Willow Smith as Kali and Jessica Chastain as Joan of Arc, over at Harpers Bazaar.
