Lady Gaga Reveals She Was Raped as a Teenby Michelle McGahan | PopCrush
Lady Gaga revealed some traumatic news about her past while on the ‘Howard Stern Show,’ courageously opening up to the host about the horrific experience of being raped as a teen.
As Gaga explained the creative decision behind her graphic performance of ‘Swine’ at SXSW in March, Stern pointed out that she seemed to allude to being raped by a music producer.
“I went through some horrific things,” Gaga explained. “I’m able to laugh now because I’ve gone through a lot of mental and physical therapy and emotional therapy to heal over the years. My music’s been wonderful for me. I was a shell of my former self at one point.”
“I was about 19… I went to Catholic school and then all this crazy stuff happened and I was going, ‘Oh, is this just the way that adults are?'” she continued. “It happens every day. It happens every day and it’s really scary and it’s sad. It didn’t affect me as much right after as it did about four or five years after. It hit me later. I was so traumatized by it, I was just like, ‘Keep going.’ I just had to get out of there.”
“I wasn’t even willing to admit that anything had even happened,” Gaga admitted, a revelation that co-host Robin Quivers related to the reasoning behind many of Bill Cosby’s alleged victims did not immediately report the assault.
“I don’t want to be defined by it,” Mother Monster continued. “I’ll be damned if somebody is going to say that every creatively intelligent thing I did is all boiled down to one d—head that did that to me.”
Gaga further explained that seeing her rapist now would be a traumatic experience for her.
“I think it would terrify me. It would paralyze me,” she shared. “I saw him one time in a store and I was so paralyzed by fear. Because it wasn’t until I was a little bit older until I went, ‘Wow, that is really messed up. … You were twenty years older than me. I was a kid. How was that a date?”
