Tina Fey, Chris Rock + More Burn David Letterman on Final ‘Late Show’by Matthew Scott Donnelly | PopCrush
Let this be a lesson: When you enlist comedians to deliver your professional eulogy, your career’s tombstone will read something like Kick Me.
Last night, after 33 years of leading CBS’ late-night efforts, Late Show With David Letterman host David Letterman officially retired and received an uproarious standing ovation in the process. Across 6,028 shows, Dave interviewed everyone from Michael Jordan to Madonna, but as his sweet spot seemed to center on chatting with comics, it was 10 of his favorite jokers who joined together on stage to recite the final installment of his show’s famous Top Ten list.
As part of the segment, Chris Rock, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and some of Hollywood’s most guffaw-inducing acts each shared one thing they’d wished they said to Dave over the years, and Alec Baldwin, for one, wasted no time gushing sentiment.
“Of all the talk shows, yours is the most geographically convenient to my home,” he said. WHY DO YOU NEVER SEEM TO HAVE A TISSUE WHEN YOU NEED ONE?!
Jerry Seinfeld, too, couldn’t help but get nostalgic (“I have no idea what I’ll do when you go off the air. You know what? I just thought of something: I’ll be fine,” he quipped), but it was Tina Fey who finally spoke to the wunderkind’s most enduring legacy.
“Thanks for finally proving men can be funny,” she noted. Yup, it’s been a long road, but the XY chromosome is finally getting its moment in the sun…
