Laverne Cox Applauds Caitlyn Jenner For Using ‘Privilege’ For Goodby Matthew Scott Donnelly | PopCrush
Laverne Cox has made it clear she does not envy Caitlyn Jenner’s very public life, but that Jenner is using her visibility for good—and to speak out on behalf of transgender people—is amazing, Cox insists.
Yesterday (August 11) on The Talk, the Orange is the New Black star praised Jenner’s outspokenness, and said that though her own transition was much more private, the transgender community benefits from as many types of voices as possible.
“It’s not about positive representation or negative representation, but diverse representation,” she says in the clip above. “The visibility that she has—she can reach so many more people, and I think that’s really amazing and impactful.”
“She’s using her privilege to elevate the stories of trans folks who don’t have the privilege that she does, and I think that’s really beautiful,” she adds.
Cox went on to explain that her own experience transitioning was a very isolated one that didn’t involve support from a single family member, but that once she packed up and shipped out to The Big Apple, she was finally able to appreciate herself, and her cloudy thoughts about gender identity became clearer.
“It was all about fixing me, and I internalized a lot of shame about who I was,” Cox says in the video. “It wasn’t until I moved to New York and met actual trans people that I was like: Okay, this is who I am, and this is not a terrible thing.“
