Update, July 7: Miguel must have heard the internet’s collective “whaaa?” regarding his arbitrary claim that his music reigns over Frank Ocean’s. In an Instagram post that begins with, “I want to clear the air,” the singer distanced himself from his previous comments.

“I guess what I’m saying is, there’s no need to compare apples to oranges, there’s something out there for everyone.” Looks like someone (or their PR reps) had a change of heart? Read Miguel’s entire statement below.

It appears Miguel has no interest in pairing his coffee with humble pie.

The singer, whose new album Wildheart was released last week, has done away with diplomacy in a new interview with The Sunday Times. Instead, he’s come out swinging against one of his contemporaries, Frank Ocean, whom he insists is a lesser artist.

“I wouldn’t say we were friends,” he told The Times. “To be completely honest—and no disrespect to anyone—I genuinely believe that I make better music, all the way around,”

Miguel added that he genuinely believes he’ll outlast Ocean in the scope of career longevity.

“It’s interesting, but we’ll see who’s in it for the long haul,” he said. “It’s like a marathon, you know?”

Clearly, he’s got confidence to spare, but Miguel still cringes when he thinks back at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, during which he attempted to clear audience members with a stage-to-stage Frogger leap. He ultimately landed on a woman named Cindy Tsai, though, who’s now seeking damages to cover medical bills she incurred after the incident.

“I was devastated,” he explained. “It was almost like mocking me. I’m a Scorpio, and we don’t really do well with embarrassment. It just reminds me that I’m not afraid to fail. You just have to take the leap of faith. Yeah, they’re gonna call you crazy. But nothing was ever achieved without being a little delusional.”
