And This Year’s Song of the Summer Is…by Matthew Scott Donnelly | PopCrush
After a three-month reign that found “See You Again,” Wiz Khalifa‘s tribute to Paul Walker, at the top of the charts, OMI’s “Cheerleader” officially became King of the Billboard Hot 100 this week. “Cheerleader” also notched a 16th week atop the Digital Reggae Chart and stands as the first No. 1 from an artist signed to Ultra Records. It first entered the Billboard Hot 100 in May at No. 95.
“Cheerleader,” which was originally released in 2012 through Oufah Records, found new popularity in 2014 when German producer Felix Jaehn remixed the tune and released it through Ultra. It’s topped the charts in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia and Canada, too.
“Officially #1 on #Billboard@hot100chart Charts…. Words can’t explain this feeling. So thankful to everyone who made this possible,” OMI captioned a celebratory Instagram photo when his top-of-the-pops standing became official, adding “Fan Of My Fans Always…. You all made this possible.”
