One Direction Are Content to Be Your Mr. Right Now on ‘Perfect’

UPDATE 10/16: “Perfect” is officially out! After releasing the defiant “Drag Me Down,” followed by the dad-rock power ballad “Infinity,’ One Direction return to form with “Perfect,” a straight-up pop song with an impossibly infectious chorus that recalls Taylor Swift‘s “Style,” if only just slightly.  Listen to the track in full above.

Shortly after Apple screwed up and tweeted (and then deleted) a premature announcement unveiling the name of One Direction‘s second single off their forthcoming fifth album Made in the A.M., titled “Perfect,” the quartet succumbed to defeat and confirmed the news themselves.

And sure, that’s all well and good, but even better and far more fulfilling would be the actual track. While we’ll have to wait until the song officially premieres on Friday (October 16) to hear it in full, Nick Grimshaw played a ten-second preview of “Perfect” during this morning’s Radio 1 Breakfast Show.

If you were worried that the single artwork — which features a hunched over Liam, murder-eyed Niall and, sallow-skinned Harry, with Louis at the forefront — might indicate that shrill-voiced Louis is set to sing lead on the track, fear not: If the short clip is any indication, it sounds Harry-heavy, at least for a short while. He sings over an upbeat tempo, “If you’d like to do whatever you’ve been dreaming about / Baby you’re perfect / Baby you’re perfect / So let’s start right now.

There ya go .. Here's the artwork for 'perfect' .. Can't wait for ya to hear our new tune

Details about One Direction’s upcoming album are scarce, but producer Julian Bunetta told Entertainment Weekly what to expect from it, sound-wise: “We’re stretching out outside of the perimeters of what a traditional pop boy band would do. We’re just kind of having fun. No rules. That’s what it’s been. We just wanted to make an album that had influences of all the previous albums, but then, an evolved version.”

And while the ten-second snippet of “Perfect” doesn’t exactly point to a sound too far removed from what we’re used to hearing from the group, it does seem like something of a return to form of their more pop-heavy hits a la their sophomore album Take Me Home.

“Perfect” is set to drop on Friday October 16, but you can listen to the short snippet above in the meantime.
