For those who celebrate LGBTQ Pride Month, today (June 26) brings an exciting cause for extra revelry: The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage nationally.
The New York Times reports that Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion, “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family.” He continued, “In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.”
For those who may still be against the idea that any two consenting adults who love each other should be allowed to marry, Kennedy wrote, “It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage.” He went on to say, “Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.”
Basically, in short, loneliness and shame suck, and #LoveWins.
Celebrities weighed in on the Supreme Court’s decision, posting reactions to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram — even those who aren’t natives of the United States, such as Harry Styles and Ellie Goulding. Singer, actress and longtime gay icon Liza Minnelli said in a Facebook post, “I have always said that everyone has the right to love who they love and today, with the historic decision from the Supreme Court, I am so happy it is now the law of the land.”
